The Family will hold a Memorial Service on Saturday May 12, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Sandtown United Methodist ChurchSammy Dwight Stokes: brother, uncle, veteran, Papaw, Daddy. A man larger than life, both in height and personality, has concluded his nearly seven decades on this earth. He joins his parents, Lewis and Mary Stokes, his brothers, Buddy, Clifford, Murman, Otis, and Bobby, and his beloved Pekingese dog, Baby, in the afterlife. In the hearts of those closest to him, he leaves behind the legacy of a towering, mustachioed man, swarthy, with coiffed salt-and-pepper hair, a booming voice, and distinct chuckle. A man unnaturally business-savvy, who knew every backroad from here to Arkansas, who could always be found in a pair of broken-in Lee’s brand blue jeans, red handkerchief folded neatly in his pocket, and whose creature comforts included Diet Coke, Red Man Chew, and sugar-free cookies or Little Debbie snack cakes. An imperfect man who saw perfection in his children, he is survived by son Brian Stokes, daughter Presli Stokes, and daughter Dana Hayes (nee Stokes) along with son-in-law Joey Hayes and two granddaughters, Aubrey Kate and Macy Brooke Hayes. He also leaves behind his dearest lifelong love, Shelia Stokes (nee Phillips), his love for whom burned even after their separation, until the day he died. And finally, he is survived by his brother, Billy Stokes, sister-in-law Mary Jane Stokes (nee Atwood), his sister, Carol Chunn (nee Stokes), and brother-in-law Thurman Chunn.
