DAN HOWARD Mrs. Burkes, 91, of Philadelphia, died Friday, October 21, 2011 at her residence. She was a native of Union, MS but early in life moved to Philadelphia where she met her husband of 48 years and lived out the rest of her life. She was a die-hard Saints fan, and never missed Peyton or Eli Manning's ballgames. Mrs. Burkes was a member of First Baptist Church of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Davis Burkes, Sr.; sister, Lessie Taylor Lewis; brothers, Cecil Taylor and Burlon Taylor; parents, LeAnder and Maude Emily Taylor. Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Burkes Morris of Ocean Springs and Sherri Burkes Heflin (David) of Philadelphia; sons, Joe Davis Burkes, Jr. (Dollye) of Philadelphia and James "Burgy" Burkes (Linda) of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Trey Burkes, Mark Morris, Scotty Burkes, Brandon Heflin, Corey Burkes and Jamie Heflin Bassett; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Taylor Davis of Jackson and a host of nieces and nephews.Serving as pallbearers were Scotty Burkes, Corey Burkes, Brandon Heflin, Josh Bassett and Eddie Nowell.
